The Fontaine de Mars is a large fountain that was installed around 1806 – 1808 on rue Saint-Dominique in the 7th arrondissement. On the eastern and western flanks of the fountain are vases, both of which depict the same fetching goddess. The features of her pulchritudinous fanny are clearly visible to fortunate passersby who happen to glance up.

Around the corner from the Champs-Elysées Clémenceau metro station, in the Square Jean-Perrin, stands a large oval fountain designed by sculptor François-Raoul Larche in 1910. Named Miroir d’eau, la Seine et ses affluents, it displays three allegorical groups that represent the tributaries of the Seine. Each group consists of a woman, each accompanied by two children, all evoking nine tributaries: L’Aube, Le Loing, L’Essonne, L’Yonne, L’Armançon, La Cure, L’Oise, La Marne, and Le Petit Morin.

The sculpted marble figures are shown admiring their own reflections in the water, and, at the same time, revealing their magnificent naked buttocks to real-life humans passing by.

Most of the covered passages of Paris were built in the first half of the 19th century. Essentially, they were shopping malls that led from one street to another.

Built in 1808, the Delorme passage linked rue de Rivoli at number 188 with rue Saint-Honore at number 177. It was destroyed in 1896, but several bas-relief sculptures that decorated the passage have been preserved. They can be viewed at the entrance of the apartment building at 177, rue Saint-Honoré.

All of the sculptures are of women. One bares here lovely fesses, with her tunic slipping demurely below the level of the fanny.

July 2013 – Fesses of the Month

Beautiful fesses abound in Paris! This month our photographer found a lovely pair in the Tuileries Garden.

In 1877, French sculptor Aimé Millet created this marble representation of Cassandre seeking the protection of the goddess Athena. Considered one of the most beautiful women in the world, Cassandra possessed the gift of prophesy, an attribute that had been bestowed on her by Apollo.

The Big Bang Boom Bloggers’ Meet-up and Tweeps’ Tweet-up is now history, and what an event it was! Bloggers and tweeps braved freezing weather and icy streets on Tuesday evening to attend the social mixer that we hosted at the Caveau Montpensier. A big thank-you goes out to Jeb, the owner, for providing space for us to meet, and to Priscila Pilon (Weekend in Paris) and Forest Collins (52 Martinis) for their invaluable advice and suggestions about how to organize this event.

The big attraction for the evening—and probably the real reason why people showed up in spite of the freezing weather—was the chance to win a scale-model chocolate statue of Auguste Rodin’s La Danaïde made by chocolatier Jean-Charles Rochoux. Elizabeth correctly identified the statue from the intriguing image of its fesses (buttocks) that we posted on our Web site two weeks before the event. Congratulations, Elizabeth!

The giveaway was timed to promote the launch of our exciting new game called Guess the Fesses—it is an online quiz that tests your knowledge of sculptures that grace the Paris landscape. Designed to be fun, the correct answers are revealed immediately after each guess. At the end of the quiz, if you want to learn more about the sculptures, you can take our free virtual tour of Paris!
