Most of the covered passages of Paris were built in the first half of the 19th century. Essentially, they were shopping malls that led from one street to another.

Built in 1808, the Delorme passage linked rue de Rivoli at number 188 with rue Saint-Honore at number 177. It was destroyed in 1896, but several bas-relief sculptures that decorated the passage have been preserved. They can be viewed at the entrance of the apartment building at 177, rue Saint-Honoré.

All of the sculptures are of women. One bares here lovely fesses, with her tunic slipping demurely below the level of the fanny.

Tom Shooting Sculpture on Sorbonne

Tom Shooting Sculpture on Sorbonne

Imagine the joy of walking down a street in Paris, glancing up, and then spotting – high above – a beautiful sculpted fanny protruding over the base of a pediment. This is what the City of Light is all about!

This month’s bountiful booty is part of a group entitled Les Sciences by Antonin Mercié. Sculpted in the late 19th-century, it is displayed on the façade of the Sorbonne University on rue des Ecoles. Science doesn’t get any better than this!

We found this month’s featured fanny on a pediment high above boulevard des Italiens in the 2nd arrondissement. The allegorical figure to whom these fesses belong is part of a group sculpted by Camille Lefèvre in 1880-1883.

To photograph this month’s featured fanny, we traveled out to Place de la Porte de Saint-Cloud in the farthest reaches of the 16th arrondissement. Two monumental fountains stand there, both the work of Paul Landowski. An artist of prodigious output, his sculptures can be found throughout Paris.

The fountains, entitled Les Sources de la Seine, stand 10 meters tall. They once gushed water from the top, creating a marvelous effect.

The position of one of the female figures, with her back demurely turned to us, gives us the opportunity to admire her dainty fesses. Follow the link below for a close-up view!
