When oenologist Francis Gourdin began working for the city of Paris, his mission was to improve the quality of the wine produced in a vineyard that lies on the slope of Montmartre. It was once a plonk that “made the Japanese tourists wince,” but today, he can proudly affirm that it is a “true red wine.” Mission accomplished! Read his story in this month’s Paris Insights newsletter.

SOS Paris is an association founded in 1973 for the purpose of defending the city’s architectural heritage. In October, I had the opportunity to meet with four members of the group to learn what can be done to safeguard the beauty of the city that is falling prey to politicians and developers who seem not to care about preserving its historic character. We recently learned that a barge makes bimonthly trips to Paris to sell wine that is produced around L’Yonne, a French administrative département that lies to the southeast of the city. Heedless of the dangers of sipping wine on a rocking boat, our intrepid reporter visited the barge to taste six different wines. Emerging unscathed from the experience, he wrote an article about how it is now possible to purchase wine from this vessel when it docks along the canal in the City of Light. Read about this unique dockside wine cellar in this month’s Paris Insights, our monthly newsletter.

This column, called a Morris column, stands at place Django Reinhardt in the 18th arrondissement. Bearing the name of this famous jazz guitarist, the column and the place were inaugurated on January 21, 2010 in his memory.

In the July edition of our Paris Insights newsletter, I wrote about Reinhardt and the café in the adjoining town of Saint-Ouen that is dedicated to the type of music that he played.

Last month we took the metro to the nearby town of Montreuil where we dined at a restaurant called La Grosse Mignonne. As well as enjoying a great meal, we also had the pleasure of listening to an entertainer named Vilna sing a medley of Brazilian songs. Every Saturday evening there is a music concert featuring jazz or world music.

On Friday and Saturday evenings during the month of March, La Grosse Mignonne holds jazz manouche (gypsy jazz) concerts under the sponsorship of David Reinhardt, the grandson of the famous Django Reinhardt. Some of the top performers in this musical genre come to the restaurant to play!

Read about the restaurant in this month’s Paris Insights. Our review is the only full-length review of La Grosse Mignonne that you will find on the Internet.
